Follow-up After Surgery for Atretic Encephaloceles in Children

This page was last updated on May 9th, 2017

Frequency of Office Visits

  • 2–3 months after surgery: At the author’s institution, patients are seen in the outpatient clinic 2–3 months after the surgery. They are carefully evaluated for symptoms and signs of neurological involvement. Closure of the skull defect is confirmed. A cranioplasty is almost never needed.
  • 1 year: At this visit the MRI is reviewed for late onset hydrocephalus.

Frequency of Imaging

  • MRI 1 year after surgery: Generally the author orders a control MRI study 1 year after surgery and then as dictated for the condition of the child, especially in cases with hydrocephalus or with associated intracranial congenital malformations.

Other Investigations Required

Seizures: EEG is ordered if seizures are suspected.

Neuropsychological testing: Neuropsychological testing is ordered if there is suspicion of developmental delay.
