On The Horizon for Cervical Spine Trauma in Children

This page was last updated on August 20th, 2024

  • Biomechanical advances: The growing pediatric spine presents additional long-term considerations compared with adults. Absorbable instrumentation or materials that can deform and respond to growth may have a role in future cervical spine management. Early adult studies have demonstrated the feasibility of biodegradable cervical instrumentation (9).
  • Protection and repair after spinal cord injury: For children with spinal cord injury after cervical trauma, future technologies directed toward neuroprotection or spinal cord regeneration will likely become available and would be a major advance in spinal rehabilitation (2).
  • Prevention: Improvements in road safety and protection of occupants in motor vehicles would likely have the most profound effect, particularly in underdeveloped countries (42).
