A widely used classification scheme (71) is based on imaging findings (ultrasound-based but can be adapted for CT and MRI use as well) and stratifies the degree of hemorrhage and subsequent ventricular dilation.
- Grade I: hemorrhage confined to the subependymal layer
- Grade II: hemorrhage with extension into the ventricle without dilation of the ventricle
- Grade III: hemorrhage with extension into the ventricle with dilation of the ventricle
- Grade IV: hemorrhage with extension into the ventricle and dilation of the ventricle plus parenchymal hemorrhage.
