Spine infections in children
- Pretreatment with antibiotics prior to surgery: When surgical intervention seems likely, some have advocated a 2–3 week course of IV antibiotic therapy to diminish inflammation at the infection site, thereby making its surgical exposure and debridement technically easier (149).
Intramedullary spinal cord abscesses in children
- Steroids considered for edema: In cases where the intramedullary spinal cord abscess is associated with an infected dermoid, some authors advocate the use of steroids to reduce the neurogenic edema associated with these lesions (62). Others refrain from the use of steroids due to their immunosuppressive effects.
