Outcome After Surgery and Endovascular Treatment
- Good outcome in children: Good outcome is reported in 85%, poor outcome in 7%, and death in 8% of children. A correlation with Hunt and Hess grade and Fisher grade is observed (8).
- Comparison with adults: About 60% of adult patients recover to their premorbid state after subarachnoid hemorrhage, whereas 15% experience poor outcome, and 25% die within 6 months (31, 32). A major determinant of outcome after aneurysmatic subarachnoic hemorrhage, which significantly increases mortality rate and decreases good outcome, is cerebral vasospasm (42).
- Obliteration rate: The complete obliteration rate is 90% (30, 58).
- Risk of recurrence: The annual risk of recurrence is 2.6% (compared to <0.5% in adults) (30).
- Risk for de novo aneurysm formation: The annual risk of de novo aneurysm formation is 7.8% (compared to 1.8% in adults) (14).
