ICRU
International Commission on Radiology Units and Measurements – established in 1925 by the International Congress of Radiology to recommend the measurement of quantities of ionizing radiation and how it reacts with matter (in particular biologic matter).
IGRT
Image-guide radiation therapy. This refers to using CT or MRI imaging to define the dimensions of the volume of tissue being treated by radiation. The three dimensional volume of the targeted area of radiation are defined on the images then related to the space in the patient that contains the target for radiation precisely. Once so defined the coordinates for the target as defined on the images is used to guide the delivery of radiation to the precisely related volume of the target within the patient.
IMRT
Intensity-modulated radiotherapy – a type radiation where the volume of tissue treated with the radiation is precisely determined using sophisticated collimators to shape multiple beams of radiation to tightly fit the target’s boundaries. The radiation is then delivered with multiple beams under computer guidance control that precisely defines what is irradiated and what is spared radiation.
IMSCT
Intramedullary spinal cord tumor. Refers to a tumor confined to the interior of the spinal cord.
IMSCTs
Intramedullary spinal cord tumors. Refers to tumors confined to the interior of the spinal cord.
inoculum
The amount of an infective organism that a host is exposed to at the time of an infection.
inotropic
Pertaining to the alteration of force or speed of a muscle’s contraction.
INR
International Normalized Ratio. A test that determines the time for a sample of blood to clot.
